The White Lion: A Historic Building
Its Unique Design
The White Lion building is thought to have been built a long, long time ago, around the end of the 1500s! It was constructed using a special method called timber framing. This means its walls were made from a strong wooden frame, with the spaces in between filled with other materials.
The first floor of the building also sticks out a little bit over the ground floor. This style is called jettied. Even though it's timber-framed, you can't see the wooden beams from the street today because the outside has been covered up.
Because of its age and special design, The White Lion is officially recognized as a Grade II listed building by Historic England. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected and kept safe for the future.
