The Wishing Horse of Oz is an exciting fantasy book. It was published in 1935. This book is the twenty-ninth in the famous Oz series. It was the fifteenth Oz book written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. The amazing pictures were drawn by John R. Neill. This book was special because Ruth Plumly Thompson had now written more Oz books than L. Frank Baum himself!
What's the Story About?
This Oz adventure begins in a small, poor land called Skampavia. The king, named Skamperoo, wants a horse. He uses some magical emerald necklaces to make a wish. Suddenly, a talking horse named Chalk falls from the sky! Chalk is from the magical Land of Oz.
A King's Big Plan
King Skamperoo thinks the emerald necklaces must be from the Emerald City. He decides he wants to take over all of Oz! He uses magic to make everyone in Oz forget their true rulers. They start to believe he is their new emperor.
Heroes to the Rescue
Only Dorothy and a flying pig named Pigasus remember the real ruler, Princess Ozma. They know they must save her. Together, they set out on a brave quest. The big mystery in the story is how to make the magical necklaces grant wishes. Only Chalk, the talking horse, knows the secret!
About the Illustrations
This book was the last Oz book to have colored pictures. Only the very first edition from 1935 had them. The International Wizard of Oz Club also released a special edition in 1990 with the original colors.
