The Wizard Test is a children's fantasy novel written by Hilari Bell. It was first published in 2005. The main idea of the story is shown in its tagline: "Honor used to seem so clear to Dayven. Now it had faded into shades of gray. Like a wizard's robe." This book tells the tale of a young boy named Dayven who discovers a hidden talent for magic, even though he doesn't want it.

The Story of Dayven

Dayven is a young "watcherlad" who really wants to become a Guardian. Guardians are brave protectors, and Dayven looks up to them. He definitely does not want to be a wizard, because he thinks wizards are tricky and can't be trusted.

Dayven's Unexpected Path

When Dayven is sent to take the wizard test, he hopes to fail it on purpose. But instead, he finds out he has a special gift for magic! Dayven refuses to believe he has this power. Later, his cousin Soren tells him that Lord Enar, the Lordowner, wants to meet him. Lord Enar asks Dayven what he thinks about wizards. Dayven tells him how much he dislikes them. Lord Enar agrees with Dayven's opinion and asks if he would spy on the wizards. Dayven agrees to do this.

A Journey of Discovery

One of the wizards, Sundar, gives Dayven money to help another wizard named Reddick get out of jail. Reddick then asks Dayven to go with him to spy on the Cenzar people. On their journey, they find a dry stream. After looking into it, they help the villagers solve the problem. As they continue their trip, they reach the city of the Cenzar. In the city, Reddick takes Dayven to the zondar, which is a training school for soldiers.

Learning About War and Life

As Dayven gets deeply involved in the war, he starts to realize something important. He learns that things aren't always simple, like good or bad, in a battle. He becomes friends with a boy from the other side of the war. During the fighting, Dayven works as a healer in the surgeon's tent, helping the wounded.

In the end, when he sees his friend hurt, Dayven uses his magic to heal him. This means he might lose everything he had dreamed of becoming. Dayven also starts to see problems with his own people's ways. The Cenzar used to only farm three fields out of four at a time. This gave the land a full year to get back its goodness. But when Dayven's people took over the land, they saw this rule as lazy and ignored it. Dayven realizes that if his people keep doing things their way, they will ruin the land. Then they will just move to a new place, as they have done many times before.

Dayven uses his spells to help the Cenzar win the battle. He decides to stay with the Cenzar instead of going with his own people when they are forced to move on.
