The Yew Tree Ball (Le bal des if in French) was a very special masked party held in the famous Hall of Mirrors at the Versailles palace. This exciting event took place on the night of February 25-26, 1745. About fifteen thousand people gathered in the Hercules Room, waiting for the ball to begin!

What Was the Yew Tree Ball?

This ball was a grand event where people wore masks and costumes. King Louis XV of France and several of his friends from the royal court dressed up in very unique outfits. They looked like topiary yew trees, which are trees shaped in fancy ways. Imagine a king dressed as a bush! It was a night of fun and mystery.

A Famous Meeting

The Yew Tree Ball is especially famous because it's where King Louis XV met Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson. The King had actually seen her before while hunting in a place called Senart. Their meeting at the ball was a big moment.

On September 14, 1745, Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson was officially introduced to the royal court. She was given the title of Marquise de Pompadour. She became a very important person in the King's life and at the court until she passed away in 1764.
