Thealka was started in 1906 by the North East Coal Company. It was first called Muddy Branch. In 1911, its name was changed to "Thealka." This new name came from a steamboat that was also called Thealka. Both the community and the steamboat were named after Alice Jane Mayo, who was the wife of a man named John C.C. Mayo. Her nickname was "Alka." Thealka is part of the 41240 ZIP code area, which also includes the nearby city of Paintsville.
