Theatre Under The Stars, often called TUTS, is a special group that puts on musical plays. It's a not-for-profit group, which means it doesn't try to make money for owners. Instead, it uses money to put on shows and help the community. TUTS is one of the biggest musical theatre companies in Vancouver, Canada.

Every summer, TUTS performs two full musical plays. These shows happen at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. TUTS also helps with other fun activities in the park. For example, they have a yearly Sing-A-Long event. The group also manages the Malkin Bowl stage and sometimes rents it out for concerts.

The Story of TUTS

How Malkin Bowl Began

In 1934, the Vancouver Park Board built an outdoor stage. It was made possible by money from a former mayor, W.H. Malkin. He wanted to honor his wife's memory. This stage was for summer concerts and orchestra music. It became known as the Malkin Bowl.

Starting Theatre Under The Stars

The Vancouver Civic Theatre Society started in 1940. It was created by people from the Vancouver Park Board. These people included A.S. Wootten, Basil Horsfall, and E.V. Young. Their goal was to offer fun shows in Stanley Park. Theatre Under the Stars officially opened its doors on August 6, 1940.

Changes and Challenges

The first Theatre Under The Stars group had its last season in 1963. But then, in 1969, a new theatre company started. It was called Theatre in the Park. This new group also put on two musicals each summer. In 1980, they decided to change their name. They chose to be called Theatre Under the Stars again.

In 1982, a fire damaged part of the Malkin Bowl stage. But the company worked hard to rebuild it. TUTS has faced tough times twice, in 1963 and 2005. Both times, it happened when they were performing the musical Can-Can. Each time, the company took a break for one season. They used that time to get organized again and come back stronger.

TUTS also works with other groups, like Live Nation Entertainment. They use the Malkin Bowl for different events and music concerts.
