The Theatre of María Guerrero (in Spanish, Teatro María Guerrero) is a famous theatre located in Madrid, Spain. It's a very important building! On March 1, 1996, it was officially named a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means it's a special place protected by the government because of its history and importance. Today, it is the official home of Spain's national theatre group, the Centro Dramático Nacional.
History of the Theatre
The Theatre of María Guerrero has a long and interesting history. Plays were first shown there starting on January 15, 1934. The theatre was then remodeled in 1935.
Closure and Reopening
Sadly, the theatre had to close its doors on April 27, 1940. This happened because of the Spanish Civil War, a big conflict that took place in Spain. After the war, the theatre reopened and continued to be a key place for performances.
Important Directors
Over the years, many talented people have led the Theatre of María Guerrero. From 1940 to 1952, Luis Escobar Kirkpatrick was in charge, with Huberto Pérez de la Ossa as his assistant. Then, Claudio de la Torre took over from 1952 to 1960. Finally, José Luis Alonso Mañés directed the theatre from 1960 until 1975. These directors helped shape the theatre's artistic journey for many decades.
