Themeda triandra is a type of grass that grows in clumps, like a small bush. It's found all over the world, including Africa, Australia, Asia, and the Pacific islands. In Australia, people often call it kangaroo grass because kangaroos like to eat it. In parts of Africa, it's known as red grass or red oat grass. It's also called rooigras in Afrikaans, which means "red grass." This grass can live for many years, growing back each season.

What Does Kangaroo Grass Look Like?
Kangaroo grass grows in thick bunches. These bunches can be up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) tall and 0.5 meters (about 1.5 feet) wide. In summer, it grows special flower parts called spikelets. These spikelets are reddish-brown and grow on branched stems.
Its leaves are usually 10 to 30 centimeters (4 to 12 inches) long. They are about 1 to 8 millimeters wide. Sometimes, the leaves can grow even longer, up to 50 centimeters (20 inches). The plant's flower cluster, called an inflorescence, is made of many small parts. It can be 10 to 30 centimeters long.
How Was Kangaroo Grass Named?
The scientific name for kangaroo grass is Themeda triandra. A scientist named Peter Forsskål first officially described this grass in 1775. He wrote about it in a book called Flora Aegyptiaco-Arabica.
The second part of its scientific name, triandra, is interesting. It comes from Latin and means "with three stamens." Stamens are the male parts of a flower. So, the name tells us something about how its flowers are structured.
Where Does Kangaroo Grass Grow?
You can find Themeda triandra in many places around the world. It grows across Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific. In Australia, it's found in every state and territory.
This grass mostly grows in open areas like grasslands and woodlands. It's a very important plant in the temperate grasslands of Australia. These grasslands are special habitats that are now considered endangered in some areas. Kangaroo grass doesn't do well if animals graze on it too much. However, it can actually benefit from occasional fires.
How Is Kangaroo Grass Used?
