Harold Dozier, who writes under the name Themo H. Peel, is an American author, poet, and graphic designer. He is famous for writing and illustrating the fantasy novel Black Star. This book is part of a children's series called Emersus Project. Themo has created many fantasy stories and poetry collections for young readers. He studied graphic design at Yale University and later earned a master's degree in poetry from the University of Edinburgh. Today, he lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Themo H. Peel's Writing Journey
Themo H. Peel started his writing career by creating books for children. His first book was called Jack and Alice. He wrote it to celebrate the birth of his friends' children. Later, he wrote a follow-up story titled Jack and Alice: Where Are The Cats?.
Early Books and Poems
As part of his studies, Themo wrote and illustrated his first children's book of poems. It was called Unexplained Phenomena (and Various Excuses Why). This collection of poems explored funny explanations for strange things that happen when you are a kid.
Soon after, he helped illustrate another book. This one was titled Kroll and Peel’s Illustrated Guide to Infectious Diseases for Young People who are Especially Curious. He worked with David Kroll, a medical doctor, on this project. It was a fun guide for kids about different diseases. It included drawings of tiny bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Fantasy Novels for Young Adults
Themo's first novel for young adults was Black Star. It was released in October 2013. He also created all the illustrations and designs for this book himself. A portion of the money from Black Star sales went to Book Aid International. This charity helps provide books and supports education in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
His second novel, Spirit Shear, came out in March 2016. This book is also part of the Emersus Project series.
Poetry and Performances
Besides writing books, Themo H. Peel also writes poetry. His poems have been published in different literary magazines. He often performs his poetry at live events in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has been a featured poet at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.
