Early Life and Family
Theobald Bourke was the son of Miles Burke, 2nd Viscount Mayo and his first wife, Honora. He was born into an important family in Ireland. Some reports suggest he studied at Oxford University. At that time, Oxford was mainly for people who followed the Anglican faith.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Around 1638, Theobald Bourke was given the title of Baronet, just like his father. This was a special honor. As Sir Theobald Bourke, he became a Member of Parliament for County Mayo. He served in this role from 1640 to 1649.
During this time, he was known for supporting the King's side in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. These were a series of conflicts that took place across England, Scotland, and Ireland.
Family Life
Theobald Bourke was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Talbot, whom he married after September 1634. Later, he married Eleanor FitzGerald.
His daughter, Maud Bourke, married Colonel John Browne. Colonel Browne was famous for building the very first Westport House. This is a well-known historic home in Ireland.
Later Years and Passing
In 1649, Theobald Bourke took over his father's title and became the 3rd Viscount Mayo. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the Irish House of Lords.
Sadly, Theobald Bourke passed away on January 15, 1653, in Galway. His death was connected to the political events and conflicts happening in Ireland at the time. His wife passed away much later, in 1693.
