Early Career and Government Work
Before the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Theodor Stolojan worked in important government roles. He was part of the Committee for State Planning, which helped decide how the country's economy would grow.
From 1972 to 1989, he worked at the Ministry of Finances. This ministry manages the country's money, like taxes and spending. He started as an economist, then became a chief of state budget accounting. Later, he was a deputy director in the department that handled foreign money and international financial deals.
Becoming Prime Minister
In September 1991, Theodor Stolojan became the Prime Minister of Romania. He held this important position until November 1992. During his time as prime minister, his government started a plan to improve the economy. This plan included limiting wages and allowing prices to be set more freely.
After his term as prime minister ended, he worked for the World Bank. The World Bank is an international organization that helps countries with their economic development.
Back in Politics: Running for President
In 2000, Stolojan returned to politics and joined the National Liberal Party (PNL). He ran for president of Romania in the November 2000 elections. He finished in third place in that election.
In August 2002, he was chosen to be the president, or leader, of the PNL party. In 2003, his party teamed up with the Democratic Party, led by Traian Băsescu. They formed an alliance called "D.A. - Dreptate şi Adevăr," which means "Justice and Truth." In February 2004, Stolojan was chosen as the alliance's candidate for the presidential election that year.
However, on October 2, 2004, Stolojan decided to step down from leading the PNL and also withdrew from the presidential race. He said he had serious health problems. After Traian Băsescu became president in December 2004, Stolojan became one of his senior advisors.
New Parties and European Parliament
In October 2006, Stolojan was no longer a member of the PNL party. In December, he started a new party called the Liberal Democrats (PLD). He was elected as its president in March 2007.
In January 2008, the PLD party joined with the Democratic Party to form a new party called the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL). Stolojan became a member of this new party.
The PDL won the most seats in the 2008 elections. On December 10, 2008, President Traian Băsescu chose Stolojan to be the next prime minister. But just five days later, Stolojan decided not to take the job. He said he wanted a younger person to lead. Emil Boc was then chosen instead.
Stolojan also served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Romania from 2007 to 2019. In this role, he represented Romania in the European Union's parliament.
