Life of Theodora Komnene
We don't know much about Theodora's early years. Her father, Prince Andronikos, died in 1142 when she was still young.
Theodora became important in history in the late 1140s. Her uncle, Manuel I, who was the Byzantine Emperor, arranged for her to marry. She was to marry Henry II of Austria. Henry's first wife had died a few years earlier.
Marriage to Henry II
The marriage was planned during a visit to Constantinople by Conrad III of Germany. Conrad was Henry II's half-brother.
Theodora and Henry were married in the grand city of Constantinople. After their marriage, they were given the title of Duke and Duchess of Austria. This title was granted to them by Frederick I Barbarossa in 1156.
Theodora lived as the Duchess of Austria until her death on January 2, 1184.
Theodora's Children
Theodora and her husband, Henry II, had three children together:
- Agnes (born around 1154, died January 13, 1182). She later married Stephen III of Hungary.
- Leopold V, Duke of Austria (born 1157, died December 31, 1194). He became a Duke of Austria, just like his father.
- Henry, Duke of Mödling (born 1158, died August 31, 1223). He married Richeza of Bohemia.
