Theodore A. Switzler was an American soldier who lived from March 3, 1828, to January 21, 1879. He was a Union officer during the American Civil War. He earned the special rank of brevet brigadier general on March 13, 1865. This was an honorary rank, showing his brave service.
Switzler's Military Journey
Theodore Switzler started his military path by forming a group called the Dade County Home Guards. He became their captain. These guards helped protect their local area in Missouri.
Early Battles and Promotions
Switzler and his company fought in the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861. After this fight, his company joined other groups. They became part of the 6th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry.
In 1862, Switzler continued to serve. On March 6, 1862, he was hurt in the neck by a small bullet. This happened at Sugar Creek, Arkansas, just before the Battle of Pea Ridge. Soon after, on March 9, 1862, he was promoted to the rank of major. Later that year, on August 13, 1862, he became a lieutenant colonel.

Switzler took part in several other important battles and campaigns. He fought in the Battle of Prairie Grove. He also served in the Vicksburg campaign, which was a major effort to control the Mississippi River. His last big campaign was the Red River Campaign.
After the war, Theodore Switzler worked as a bookkeeper and a merchant.
