What is the Theodore Brown House?
The Theodore Brown House was first called Woodview. It was built by a well-known farmer named Theodore Brown, who lived from 1821 to 1899. The property has two main parts: the large main house and a smaller building called a carriage house.
How Was the House Built?
The main house is a mansion built in the Gothic Revival style. This style looks a bit like old castles or churches, with pointed arches and fancy details. The bricks used to build the house were actually made right there on the property!
Who Lived in the House?
In 1920, the house was sold to the Monohan family. They changed its name to Woodhaven. The Monohan family owned the house for many years, until the 1970s.
How Was the House Saved?
Later, the land around the house started to be developed. This means new buildings and roads were planned. The Theodore Brown House was almost torn down by the developers. Luckily, it was saved from being destroyed and was carefully fixed up. Many of its original features are still there today. These include special diamond-shaped windowpanes and tall, arched doors that are 14 feet high.
What is the House Now?
Today, the main house and the carriage house are part of a special place called The Inn at Woodhaven. This is a bed and breakfast, which means people can stay there overnight. It opened its doors to guests in 1993.
