The Thetford Hill Historic District is a special area in Thetford, Vermont. It protects the old village center, which looks much like it did in the 1800s. This district grew between 1792 and 1860. It is located where Vermont Route 113 and Academy Road meet.
This historic area has many old homes. It also includes buildings from Thetford Academy. The Thetford Meetinghouse, built in 1785-1788, is also here. This church is one of Vermont's oldest still in use. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it is an important historical site.
Exploring Thetford Hill's Past
The village of Thetford Hill started with its meetinghouse. This building was constructed between 1785 and 1788. It was first on the town common, a public open space. In 1830, the meetinghouse was moved. This was part of a change to keep church and government separate. It then got its current Greek Revival style front.
How Thetford Hill Village Grew
The village did not grow much at first. But things changed when Thetford Academy was founded. This school started in 1819. It is the oldest secondary school in Vermont. The school's original buildings were destroyed by fire in 1942. The buildings you see today were built after that fire. They are in a Colonial Revival style.
The village did not grow much from 1860 until the mid-1900s. Any new buildings added since then fit in well. They match the 19th-century look of the area.
What You'll See in Thetford Hill
The historic district spreads out from the main road junction. It goes east along Vermont 113 and south along Academy Road. It also extends a bit west on Route 113. And it goes north on Houghton Hill Road.
The town green is at the southwest corner. The church is a main feature of the village. It is across Route 113 to the north. The Thetford Academy campus is at the south end. It is next to Thetford Hill State Park. The eastern edge of the district is at Garey Road.
Most buildings are homes. They are usually one to two-and-a-half stories tall. Most are made of wood. However, some buildings are made of brick. The most common building styles are Greek Revival and Federal. These styles were popular long ago.
