The thickhead ground snake (also known as Atractus crassicaudatus) is a type of snake that doesn't have venom. It belongs to a group of snakes called colubrids. This snake is special because it is found only in central Colombia. It doesn't have any different types or subspecies that scientists recognize.

What Does the Thickhead Ground Snake Look Like?
This snake has a dark purplish-brown or blackish color. This color is on both its back and its belly.
Unique Markings and Colors
You might see small, yellowish spots on its back. On its belly, these yellowish spots are a bit larger. The first row of scales along its sides, right next to its belly scales, is yellowish. It also has a yellowish patch on each side of its head, near its temples.
Head and Body Features
Its snout, which is the front part of its head, is rounded. The scales on its head have specific shapes and sizes. For example, the scale at the very front of its nose is small. The scales on its body are smooth to the touch. They are arranged in 17 rows along its body.
Size of Adult Snakes
Adult thickhead ground snakes can grow up to about 42 centimeters (16.5 inches) long. Their tail is usually about one-tenth of their total body length.
Where Does the Thickhead Ground Snake Live?
This snake is found only in a specific area of central Colombia. This area is called the Altiplano Cundiboyacense.
High-Altitude Homes
You can find these snakes living at high altitudes. They live in places that are between 2,000 and 3,200 meters (about 6,560 to 10,500 feet) above sea level.
Common Locations in Colombia
The thickhead ground snake is quite common around the capital city of Bogotá. You can often find them in the Eastern Hills of Bogotá. They are also seen near Lake Herrera, which is on the Bogotá savanna.
