Phlox

carolina

Phlox carolina, also known as the thickleaf phlox, is a beautiful species of flowering plant. It belongs to the plant family called Polemoniaceae. This plant is a type of herb that comes back every year, which means it's a perennial.

It can grow quite tall, reaching about 1.2 meters (4 feet) high and 45 centimeters (1.5 feet) wide. Its leaves can be up to 13 centimeters (5 inches) long. In the summer, you can see its lovely purple or pink flowers bloom.

What's in a Name?

The second part of its scientific name, carolina, tells us something special about where this plant naturally grows. It's named after its native home in the eastern part of the United States. This is a common way for plants to get their names, often reflecting their origin.

Garden Favorites: Special Varieties

Phlox carolina is very important because it's the parent plant for many different garden varieties. These special versions are called cultivars. Gardeners have chosen them for their unique colors or other features.

Two famous cultivars are:

  • 'Bill Baker', which has pretty pink flowers.
  • 'Miss Lingard', known for its pure white flowers.

Both 'Bill Baker' and 'Miss Lingard' have won a special award called the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This award means they are excellent plants for gardens and are highly recommended by experts.
