What Was the Thirteenth Council of Toledo?
The Thirteenth Council of Toledo was a big gathering of religious and royal leaders. These meetings were common in the Visigothic Kingdom. They helped kings make important decisions and laws.
Why Was This Meeting Held?
King Erwig wanted to fix some old problems. He asked the council to forgive people who had rebelled against the previous king, King Wamba, in 673. He wanted these rebels and their families to get back their property and their jobs.
The king also wanted to forgive anyone who had been in trouble for similar reasons since the time of King Chintila (from 636 to 640). King Erwig hoped that by forgiving these people, there would be no more old fights or grudges (called vendettas) during his rule.
Important Decisions Made
The council made several key decisions:
- They said that people should not be forced to confess to crimes. This meant that justice had to be fair, without using torture.
- They also set a maximum time a person could be kept in prison. This was to make sure people were not held forever without a proper reason.
- Finally, the council repeated an old rule. This rule said that no one should harm the royal family after the king had died. This was to protect the king's family and keep peace in the kingdom.
