Thirunageswaram is a small town in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, a state in India. It is located about 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) east of Kumbakonam, a larger business city. Thirunageswaram is known for its beautiful temples and green surroundings.

This town is one of many in Tamil Nadu named after the special trees that grow there. It is believed that this area was once a forest filled with Chamapaka trees. That's why it was called Chamapakavanam.

People and the Land

As of 2001, Thirunageswaram had a population of 9,814 people. About 49% of the people were male, and 51% were female. Most adults in the town can read and write. The literacy rate was 72%, which is higher than the national average for India at that time.

The town gets a good amount of rain every year, about 120 centimeters (47 inches). This makes the land very fertile. The main crops grown here are rice and corn. You can also find many coconut and mango farms.

Famous Temples of Thirunageswaram

Thirunageswaram is home to two very important temples. One is a famous Vaishnavite temple, which worships the god Vishnu. The other is a Shaivite temple, which worships the god Shiva.

Oppliyappan Sannadhi Temple

The Oppiliappan temple is a popular place for pilgrims to visit all year round. A big festival called Ramanavami is celebrated here every April or May. Two special events during this festival are Thirukalyanam and Kanakibishekam.

An interesting rule at this temple is that no food with salt is allowed inside. People believe that nothing containing salt should ever be brought into this holy place.

Naganatha Swami Temple

The Tirunageswaram Naganathar Temple is dedicated to Shiva. The name "Naganatha" means "God of Snakes." A very special part of this temple is the shrine for Rahu bhagawan. Rahu is one of the nine important celestial bodies in Hindu astrology.

This temple is also famous for a daily event during a time called Rahukaalam. During this time, milk is poured over the statue of Rahu. What's amazing is that the milk turns blue as it flows over the statue, then turns white again when it reaches the floor! Many people come to see this wonder every day. This is also the only place where you can see Rahu bhagawan with his consorts (partners).

Ancient mythological serpents like Aadi Seshan, Dakshan, and Kaarkotakan are believed to have worshipped Shiva here. Many wise people and kings, including Nala, Gautama Maharishi, Parashara, and Bhageerata, are also connected to this temple.
