Thomas Archer, 1st Baron Archer (born July 21, 1695 – died October 19, 1768) was an important English politician. He served as a Member of Parliament and later became a nobleman, known as Baron Archer, in 1747. His family's special symbol, called a coat of arms, showed three golden arrows on a blue background.

Thomas Archer was the oldest son of Andrew Archer and Elizabeth Dashwood. His family lived at a large estate called Umberslade Hall in Tanworth in Arden, a town in Warwickshire, England. Thomas had a younger brother named Henry Archer. When his father passed away in 1741, Thomas inherited Umberslade Hall.

A Career in Politics

Thomas Archer had a busy career in politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament, which meant he represented people in the English government.

Serving as a Member of Parliament

From 1735 to 1741, Thomas Archer was the Member of Parliament for the town of Warwick. After that, from 1741 to 1747, he represented a small area called Bramber in Sussex. Bramber was known as a "rotten borough," which meant it had very few voters but still had a representative in Parliament.

Becoming a Baron

In 1747, Thomas Archer was given a special honor: he was made a "peer," which meant he became a nobleman with the title of Baron Archer. This was a very important position. He also held another role called Custos Rotulorum of Flintshire from 1750 to 1753, which involved keeping official records in a county in Wales.

Helping the Colony of Georgia

In 1734, Thomas Archer took on an interesting role. He became a trustee for the new colony of Georgia in America. His younger brother also joined him in this important work. As trustees, they helped manage and support the early development of this new settlement on the east coast of America.

Family Life and Legacy

Thomas Archer married Catherine Tipping. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Tipping, 1st Baronet. Thomas and Catherine had a son and several daughters.

Succession and End of a Title

When Thomas Archer passed away, his son, Andrew Archer, 2nd Baron Archer, inherited his title. However, when Andrew died in 1778, the title of Baron Archer ended because he did not have any sons to pass it on to.

Notable Family Members

One of Thomas Archer's daughters, Catherine, married a nobleman named Other Windsor, 4th Earl of Plymouth.
