Career and Public Service
After college, Barlow worked as a banker and a business executive. He also worked as a consultant for the Natural Resources Defense Council. This group helps protect our planet's natural resources.
Running for Congress
In 1992, Barlow decided to run for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. He wanted to represent Kentucky's 1st congressional district. This is a specific area of Kentucky that elects one person to speak for them in Congress.
Barlow ran against the person who already held the seat, Carroll Hubbard. Barlow won this election, which was a big surprise! He then served in Congress from January 3, 1993, to January 3, 1995.
Later Elections
In 1994, Barlow tried to get re-elected. However, he lost to Ed Whitfield. This was a year when many members of the Republican Party won elections across the country.
Barlow tried to win his old seat again in 1998, but he lost. In 2002, he ran for the United States Senate, which is the other part of Congress. He lost that election by a small number of votes. He ran for his old House seat one more time in 2006, but again, he was defeated by Ed Whitfield.
