Sir Thomas Blanke (died 1588) was an English politician. He was a very important leader in London, serving as its Lord Mayor.

Early Life and Career

Thomas Blanke was the son of a man also named Thomas Blanke. His father was a haberdasher in London. A haberdasher is someone who sells small items like needles, thread, and ribbons. Sir Thomas Blanke followed in his father's footsteps and also became a haberdasher.

He became an alderman in 1572. An alderman was like a city council member, helping to run the city. In 1574, he served as one of the Sheriffs of London. These were important officials who helped keep law and order in the city.

Becoming Lord Mayor

In 1582, Thomas Blanke was chosen to be the Lord Mayor of London. This was a very important job, as the Lord Mayor was the main leader of the city.

However, his election happened during a difficult time. There was a serious outbreak of the plague. Because of this dangerous disease, there was no big parade or celebration for his election. He also could not meet Queen Elizabeth I until the next year in May.

Dealing with the Plague

Sir Thomas Blanke spent most of his time as Lord Mayor dealing with the effects of the plague. He worked hard to help the people of London during this tough period. Because of his efforts, he earned the nickname "The Good Knight."

He died in 1588 when he was 74 years old. He was buried at St Mary-at-Hill church. His wife lived until 1596 and was buried in the same tomb.

Sir Thomas Blanke did not have any children. So, his property, called Abbott's Inn, went to the Altham family. This family kept the property until it was destroyed in the terrible Great Fire of London.
