Thomas Chippendale the Younger (born in 1749, died in 1822) was a talented English artist, furniture maker, and designer. He was the oldest of eleven children born to the famous furniture maker, Thomas Chippendale.

Thomas the Younger was very dedicated to his father. He worked closely with him in the family business until his father passed away in 1779. After that, Thomas the Younger took over the business.

What Happened to the Family Business?

The Chippendale family business was well-known. It was even listed in a book called The Cabinet Directory in 1803. However, the business faced difficulties and went bankrupt in 1804. This meant it had to close its doors for a while. But don't worry, it was later started up again!

Thomas Chippendale's Art Career

Besides making furniture, Thomas Chippendale the Younger was also a skilled painter. He was a member of the Society of Arts, which is an organization that supports arts, manufacturing, and trade. He also showed his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts. He exhibited his artwork there many times between 1784 and 1801.
