Thomas Hesketh Douglas Blair Cochrane, 13th Earl of Dundonald (born February 21, 1886 – died May 23, 1958) was an important person in the British Army. He fought in World War I. He also served as a representative peer for Scotland, which meant he represented Scottish nobles in the British Parliament. He was also in charge of the Anglo-Chilean Society.

Life of Thomas Cochrane

Thomas Cochrane was born on February 21, 1886. His father was Douglas Cochrane, 12th Earl of Dundonald. His mother was Winifred Bamford-Hesketh.

Military Service

Thomas became a captain in the Scots Guards. He fought in World War I. He also worked on the General Staff, helping to plan military operations.

During the war, in November 1914, Thomas was wounded while fighting. He had to return home to recover. For his service, he received awards from other countries. These included the Order of the Merit of Chile and the Order por Servicios Distinguidos of Peru.

Becoming the Earl

When his father passed away on April 12, 1935, Thomas became the 13th Earl of Dundonald. He also gained other titles, like the 13th Lord Cochrane of Paseley and Ochiltrie.

From 1941 to 1955, he was a representative peer for Scotland. This role allowed him to speak for Scottish nobles in the House of Lords. He was also the chairman of the Anglo-Chilean Society. Thomas Cochrane passed away on May 23, 1958. He never married.

Gwrych Castle History

Gwrych Castle was the main home of the Dundonald family. The 12th Earl of Dundonald got the estate in 1878. This happened when he married Winifred Bamford-Hesketh, who was the only heir to the property.

Changes to the Estate

In 1919, Thomas's mother sold parts of the family's land. This included nearby mines. When she died in 1924, she left the rest of the estate to King George V.

The King could not accept the gift. So, he gave the property to the Order of St John of Jerusalem. In 1928, the estate was sold back to the 12th Earl of Dundonald for £78,000.

Castle During World War II

During World War II, Gwrych Castle was used for a special purpose. It housed 200 Jewish refugee children. These children were part of the Kindertransport, which saved them from danger.

After the war, in 1946, the 13th Earl of Dundonald sold the entire estate. He sold it to Robert Rennie of Chester for £12,000.
