Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Charles Colyear, 4th Earl of Portmore (born March 27, 1772 – died January 18, 1835) was an important British landowner and politician. For many years, from 1785 to 1823, he was known as Viscount Milsington before he became the Earl of Portmore.

Early Life of Thomas Colyear

Thomas Charles Colyear was the son of William Colyear, 3rd Earl of Portmore. His mother was Lady Mary Leslie, who was the second daughter of the 10th Earl of Rothes.

His Career and Public Life

Thomas Colyear was interested in many things, including sports and politics.

Cricket Player

Before he became a politician, Thomas Colyear was a talented amateur cricket player. He played in three known professional cricket matches between 1792 and 1793. He often played for teams from Hampshire and was one of the early members of the famous Marylebone Cricket Club.

Political Career

Lord Portmore also served in the British government. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area called Boston in Lincolnshire. He held this important position from 1796 to 1802. An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the country's parliament, where laws are made.

His Family Life

Thomas Colyear was married two times during his life.

In 1793, he married Lady Mary Elizabeth Bertie. She was the daughter of Brownlow Bertie, 5th Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. They had one son together:

  • Hon. Brownlow Charles Colyear. He inherited a lot of property from his grandfather, the Duke of Ancaster, in 1809. Sadly, he died in Rome in 1819 from injuries he got in a fight with bandits.

After his first wife passed away, Lord Portmore married Frances Murrells in 1828.

When Thomas Charles Colyear died on January 18, 1835, his family titles, like "Earl of Portmore," ended because he had no more sons to pass them on to. His lands and properties then went to his cousin, James Dawkins, who was also a Member of Parliament.
