Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Conyers was an important English politician who lived a long time ago, from about 1666 to 1728. He was a member of the Tory Party, which was one of the main political groups in England back then. Thomas Conyers served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons for many years, helping to make laws for the country.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Conyers was born around 1666. He was the fifth son of Nicholas Conyers. When he was 17, in 1684, he went to Trinity College, Oxford to study. After that, he studied law at a place called the Middle Temple in 1686.

In 1690, Thomas Conyers married Elizabeth Hall. She was the daughter of Thomas Hall and inherited a large estate called Elemore Hall in County Durham. This marriage helped Thomas Conyers gain property and become more influential in the area.

Serving in Parliament

Thomas Conyers became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Durham City. An MP is someone elected by people to represent them and help make decisions in the government. He was first elected in 1698.

He was a strong member of the Tory party. Sometimes, he disagreed with the government's plans, like when he opposed preparing for war with France.

In 1704, he got a special job working for Prince George of Denmark. But he lost this job in 1706 because he voted against a candidate supported by the King's court.

Thomas Conyers was re-elected many times. He was known as a "Tory patriot" because he was against continuing a long war and wanted to fix problems from the previous government. In 1713, he and his son-in-law, George Baker, were both elected to represent Durham City.

He continued to vote with the Tory party. He was elected again in 1715 and 1722. He always voted against the Whig Party, which was the other main political group in power at the time. He stopped being an MP in 1727.

Later Life and Legacy

Thomas Conyers passed away on October 4, 1728. He and his wife Elizabeth had one daughter, also named Elizabeth. She inherited the family estate, Elemore Hall.

His daughter Elizabeth married George Baker. Their son, who was also named George, later rebuilt Elemore Hall, making it a new and improved home.
