Thomas Americus Erskine (born May 3, 1802, died May 10, 1877) was a British diplomat and a member of the nobility, known as a 'peer.' He held the title of the 3rd Baron Erskine.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Americus Erskine was born on May 3, 1802. He was the oldest son of David Erskine, 2nd Baron Erskine, who was also a diplomat and a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Frances Cadwalader (1781–1843).

Thomas came from an important family. His grandfather, Thomas Erskine, 1st Baron Erskine, was the first person in their family to be given the title of Baron. On his mother's side, his grandfather was John Cadwalader, an American general who fought in the American Revolutionary War.

Education and Career

Thomas Erskine went to school at Harrow and later studied at the University of Edinburgh.

His career in diplomacy began in 1824. He worked as an 'attaché' for the British government in different cities, including Turin, Naples, and Lisbon. An attaché is a junior diplomat who helps with the work of an embassy or legation in another country. He served in these roles until 1827.

When his father passed away on March 19, 1855, Thomas inherited the title. He became the 3rd Baron Erskine of Restormel Castle in Cornwall. This title had been created for his grandfather in 1806.

Personal Life

On May 12, 1830, Thomas Erskine married Louisa Newnham Legh. Louisa was a widow and the daughter of George Lewis Newnham.

Louisa, Lady Erskine, died on March 10, 1867. Lord Erskine passed away on May 10, 1877. Since he did not have any children, his title was passed on to his younger brother, John.
