Thomas Howard, 5th Duke of Norfolk (born March 9, 1627 – died December 13, 1677) was an important English nobleman. He held the title of Duke of Norfolk, which was a very high rank in England.
Early Life and Family
Thomas Howard was born into a powerful family. His parents were Henry Frederick Howard, 22nd Earl of Arundel and Elizabeth Stuart. His mother's father was Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox.
The Howard family was well-known in England. They had a long history of serving the country.
Becoming a Duke
The title of Duke of Norfolk had been taken away from Thomas's family in 1572. This happened because his great-great-grandfather, also named Thomas Howard, was involved in a serious crime against the king.
In 1660, King Charles II decided to give the title back. The House of Lords, which is part of the English Parliament, almost all agreed. So, Thomas Howard became the 5th Duke of Norfolk.
Life as a Duke
Thomas Howard faced some health challenges. These challenges made it difficult for him to get married or carry out the duties of a Duke.
Because of this, he spent much of his life in a special care home. This home was located in a city called Padua in Italy.
His brother, Sir Henry Howard, helped out. He took on some important roles, like being the Earl Marshal. This was until Thomas passed away in 1677. After Thomas's death, Henry became the next Duke of Norfolk.
Another one of Thomas's brothers, Philip, became a Catholic cardinal. This is a very high position in the Catholic Church.
