Thomas Howell (poet) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Howell was an English poet who lived a long time ago, around the 1500s. We don't know exactly when he was born or when he died, but we know he was active and writing poems in 1568.

Who Was Thomas Howell?

Thomas Howell likely came from a town called Dunster in Somerset, England. He was known as a "Gentleman," which meant he came from a good family.

His Early Writings

In 1568, Thomas Howell published a book of his poems called "The Arbor of Amitie." This book was filled with pleasant poems and pretty verses. He dedicated this work to a noblewoman named Lady Ann Talbot. Around this time, Howell seemed to be working for the Earl of Shrewsbury, a very important person.

Another collection of his poems, "New Sonnets and Pretty Pamphlets," was approved for publishing in 1567 or 1568. This book was dedicated to his friend, Master Henry Lassels. Some of the poems in this collection were also written by another poet named John Keeper, who was also from Somerset.

Later Works and Patrons

Howell's last known work was published in 1581. It was called "H. His Deuises." He wrote these poems for his own practice and for his friends to enjoy.

At this time, Howell was working for the Countess of Pembroke, whose name was Mary Sidney. He wrote these poems while he was at Wilton House. He mentioned that he wrote them "at idle times" to avoid being too idle or getting into trouble.
