After the war ended, Thomas Johnson continued his work in politics. He became a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives. He served there from 1876 to 1877. This group helps make laws for the state of Kentucky.

Later, Johnson was elected to the Kentucky State Senate. He served as a state senator from 1878 to 1882. The State Senate is another important part of Kentucky's government. Thomas Johnson passed away in 1906.
