Thomas Lister, 1st Baron Ribblesdale (born March 22, 1752 – died September 22, 1826) was an important British politician and landowner. He lived at Gisburne Park in Yorkshire, England. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Clitheroe from 1773 to 1790. Later, he was given the special title of Baron Ribblesdale in 1797. This meant he became a "peer," which is a noble title.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Lister was born on March 22, 1752. His father, also named Thomas Lister, was a politician too. His father was an MP for Clitheroe from 1745 to 1763.
Young Thomas went to Westminster School, a famous school in London. After that, he studied at Brasenose College, Oxford, which is part of the University of Oxford. He started there when he was 17. He earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1772. He also received a Doctor of Canon Law (DCL) degree in 1773.
Political and Military Career
In 1773, Thomas Lister was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Clitheroe. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons, which is a part of the British Parliament. He kept this job after the elections in 1774, 1780, and 1784.
When the American War of Independence began, Thomas Lister showed his support for the government. He paid for a warship, called a frigate, out of his own money. He then offered it to the government to use in the war.
In 1779, he created his own military group called "Lister's Light Dragoons." These were soldiers who rode horses. He was made a major in the army that same year. Later, in 1790, he became a colonel. He also commanded the Craven Regiment of Yeoman Cavalry from 1790 until he died.
Family Life
Thomas Lister married Rebecca Feilding on November 7, 1789. They got married in London.
In 1794, he was given another important role: High Sheriff of Yorkshire. This was a very old and respected position in his home county.
On October 28, 1797, he was given the title of Baron Ribblesdale. This made him a "peer," which meant he was part of the nobility and could sit in the House of Lords, another part of Parliament.
Thomas Lister passed away on September 22, 1826, when he was 74 years old.
