Who Was Thomas Madryn?

Thomas Madryn was a notable figure from Wales. His father was either Robert Madryn or Griffith Madryn, both of whom held an important local position called High Sheriff in different years. Being a High Sheriff meant they were in charge of law and order in their area.

Early Life and Roles

Thomas Madryn himself became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Carnarvonshire. A J.P. is someone who helps keep the peace and deals with minor legal issues in their local community. He also served as the High Sheriff of Carnarvonshire in 1642. This was a very important job, especially as the country was heading towards war.

Thomas Madryn and the English Civil War

The English Civil War was a huge conflict in England between 1642 and 1651. It was fought between those who supported the King (called Cavaliers) and those who supported the Parliament (called Roundheads). Thomas Madryn was a strong supporter of Parliament.

Fighting for Parliament

During the war, Thomas Madryn became a colonel in the Parliamentary army. This means he was a high-ranking officer, leading soldiers in battles. His involvement shows he was deeply committed to the Parliament's cause.

After the War

Even after the main fighting ended, Thomas Madryn continued to play important roles. He was High Sheriff of Carnarvonshire again in 1648 and 1649. He was also appointed as a "commissioner for sequestration" in North Wales in 1650. This job involved managing property that had been taken from people who supported the King. He held this position for many years. In 1653, he became the "Custos Rotulorum" of Anglesey, which meant he was the chief keeper of the county's records.

Madryn in Parliament

In 1654, Thomas Madryn was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Carnarvonshire. He served in the First Protectorate Parliament, which was a special Parliament during the time when England was ruled by Oliver Cromwell, not a king.

Later Political Efforts

Thomas Madryn tried to become a Member of Parliament again for Carnarvonshire in 1659. Although he wasn't successful that time, he showed his continued interest in serving the public.

After the Monarchy Returned

After the period without a king, the monarchy was brought back in England. This event is known as the Restoration. Even after these big changes, Thomas Madryn continued to be a respected figure. He was appointed High Sheriff of Carnarvonshire one more time in 1666, showing his lasting influence and importance in the region.
