Thomas Mayo (born January 24, 1790 – died January 13, 1871) was an important British doctor. He was known for his work in medicine and for leading a major medical group.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Mayo was born in London. His father, John Mayo, was also a doctor. Young Thomas had private lessons for three years. He then spent a year and a half at Westminster School. After that, he had more private tutoring to prepare for Oriel College, which is part of Oxford University.

He studied hard at Oxford. He earned his first medical degree (MB) in 1815. He then earned a higher medical degree (MD) in 1818. These degrees showed he was a fully qualified doctor.

A Doctor's Career

After finishing his studies, Thomas Mayo took over his father's successful medical practice. This was in a town called Tunbridge Wells. His father had built a good reputation there.

In 1835, Thomas Mayo moved to London. He worked for many years as a doctor at the Marylebone Infirmary. An infirmary was like a hospital where people could get medical care.

Important Medical Roles

Thomas Mayo became a very respected doctor. In 1819, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. This is a very old and important group for doctors in the UK. Being a Fellow means you are a highly recognized member.

He gave several important talks at the Royal College of Physicians. He gave the Lumleian lectures in 1839 and 1842. He also gave the Harveian oration in 1841. In 1853, he gave the Croonian Lecture. These were special speeches about medical topics.

From 1857 to 1862, Thomas Mayo was the president of the Royal College of Physicians. This was a very high honor. It meant he was the leader of this important medical organization.

In 1835, he was also chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is another famous group that recognizes top scientists.

Later Life

Thomas Mayo passed away in 1871. He died in Corsham, a town in Wiltshire, England. He is remembered for his contributions to medicine and his leadership roles.
