Sir Thomas Reeve, PC (born 1673 – died January 19, 1737) was an important judge in Britain. He had a successful career in law, becoming one of the most respected legal figures of his time.

Early Life and Legal Training

Sir Thomas Reeve was the son of Richard Reeve. He began his education at Trinity College, Oxford in 1688 when he was 15 years old. Soon after, in 1690, he started his legal training at Inner Temple. This was a special place in London where people learned to become lawyers.

In 1698, he officially became a lawyer, which is called being "called to the Bar". He later moved to another legal society called Middle Temple in 1713. He continued to rise in the legal world. In 1720, he was invited to join the "Inn bench," which meant he was a senior member of his legal society. He even served as its treasurer in 1728.

Rising Through the Ranks

Sir Thomas Reeve became a King's counsel in 1717. This was a special title given to experienced lawyers who advised the King. In 1722, he became the attorney-general for the Duchy of Lancaster. This was an important legal role for a special part of the King's land.

At this time, he was one of the busiest lawyers in Britain. Records show that in 1720, he worked on more cases than any other lawyer in the Court of the King's Bench. This court handled many important legal disputes. His hard work and skill led to him being appointed as a judge in the King's Bench on November 18, 1723.

Becoming a Chief Justice

On April 17, 1733, Sir Thomas Reeve became a Puisne justice in the Court of Common Pleas. This court dealt with disagreements between regular people. To qualify for this role, he also became a Serjeant-at-law. This was another special rank for senior lawyers.

In 1735, the Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, Sir Robert Eyre, passed away. Many people thought Sir Thomas Reeve would take his place. Another lawyer, Alexander Denton, was also considered. However, Denton was not chosen because of his health. So, on January 26, 1736, Sir Thomas Reeve was promoted to Chief Justice. He was also made a knight at the same time, which is why he is called "Sir" Thomas Reeve.

Soon after, he was appointed to the Privy Council. This was a group of important advisors to the King.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir Thomas Reeve passed away while still in office on January 19, 1737, less than a year after becoming Chief Justice. He was buried in Temple Church on January 28. He was a very wealthy man when he died, owning a lot of money and land.

He was married to Annabella Topham. Her brother, Richard Topham, was in charge of important historical records at the Tower of London.

A special memorial for Sir Thomas and his wife, featuring their busts, can be found in John the Baptist Church in Windsor. This memorial was created by a famous sculptor named Peter Scheemakers.
