Thomas Sattelberger (born 5 June 1949) is a German manager and politician. He was a member of the Bundestag, which is like the parliament of Germany, representing the state of Bavaria. He served in this role from 2017 until 2022.
Besides his work in the Bundestag, Mr. Sattelberger also served as a special secretary for the Federal Minister of Education and Research from December 2021 to May 2022. He was also in charge of something called "Translational Research," which helps turn new scientific discoveries into useful products or treatments. He left his positions in 2022 for health and personal reasons.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Sattelberger was born in Munderkingen, a town in Germany. He studied business administration and earned a degree from a special type of university called a "Duale Hochschule."
Career in Management
Thomas Sattelberger had a long career working for big companies before he became a politician.
- From 1975, he worked at Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, focusing on education for employees.
- In 1982, he moved to MTU Aero Engines, where he helped develop leaders for the company.
- He returned to Daimler-Benz in 1988 and then worked at DASA in 1989, leading their education and management development programs.
- In 1994, he joined Deutsche Lufthansa, a major airline. There, he started the Lufthansa School of Business. This was the first "corporate university" in Germany, meaning it was a school run by a company to train its own employees.
- Later, in 2003, he became an executive at Continental AG, a company that makes car parts. He was in charge of human resources and labor relations.
- In 2007, he took a similar role at Deutsche Telekom, a large telecommunications company, where he worked until 2012.
Political Career
Thomas Sattelberger became a member of the Bundestag after the 2017 German federal election. The Bundestag is where laws are made in Germany.
- From 2018 to 2021, he was part of important committees. These included the Committee for Education, Research and Technology Assessment, and the Committee for Labour and Social Affairs.
- He also spoke for his political group, the FDP, on topics like new inventions, education, and scientific research.
After the 2021 German federal election, different political parties worked together to form a new government. This was called a "traffic light coalition" because of the colors of the parties involved: red for the Social Democratic Party (SPD), green for the Green Party, and yellow for the FDP.
- Mr. Sattelberger was part of the FDP team that discussed new ideas and research for the government.
- After the new government was formed, he was appointed as a special secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research.
- In this role, he focused on important topics like diversity (making sure different people are included), technology plans, STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and digitization (using more digital technology).

Thomas Sattelberger has also been involved in many other organizations:
- He was a member of the Supervisory Board for the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIN-D) in 2022. This agency helps develop new and groundbreaking ideas.
- He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy.
- He is also on the Board of Trustees for the Deutsches Museum, a famous science and technology museum.
- He is a member of the Advisory Board for the Institut for Employability (IBE) at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences.
- Since 2018, he has been an alternate member of the Board of Trustees for the Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation.
- Since 2020, he has been a member of Rotary International, a global service organization.
- He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for AFS Intercultural Programs – Germany, which helps students study abroad.
