Thomas Sattelberger, born on June 5, 1949, is a German politician and a former business leader. He was a member of the German Parliament, called the Bundestag, representing Bavaria from 2017 to 2022.
Besides his work in Parliament, Mr. Sattelberger also served as a special assistant to the Federal Minister of Education and Research. He held this important role from December 2021 to May 2022. In this position, he helped connect new research ideas with real-world uses.
He left his political roles in 2022 for health and personal reasons.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Sattelberger was born in Munderkingen, a town in Germany. He studied business administration and earned a degree in this field.
Career in Business
Thomas Sattelberger had a long and successful career in big companies before becoming a politician.
- From 1975, he worked at Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, focusing on education for employees.
- In 1982, he moved to MTU Aero Engines, where he helped develop future leaders.
- He returned to Daimler-Benz in 1988, working for DASA (a part of Daimler-Benz) in education and management development.
- In 1994, he joined Deutsche Lufthansa, a major airline. There, he led the group that developed executives and personnel. He also started the Lufthansa School of Business. This was the first "corporate university" in Germany. A corporate university is like a school run by a company to train its own employees.
- In 2003, he became a top human resources executive at Continental AG in Hanover.
- From 2007 to 2012, he held the same important position at Deutsche Telekom in Bonn.
Political Career
Thomas Sattelberger became a member of the Bundestag (the German Parliament) after the 2017 German federal election. He was part of the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
- From 2018 to 2021, he was a member of two important committees in Parliament. These were the Committee for Education, Research and Technology Assessment, and the Committee for Labour and Social Affairs.
- He was also the main spokesperson for his political group on topics like innovation, education, and research.
After the 2021 German federal election, different political parties worked together to form a new government. This group was called a "traffic light coalition" because of the colors of the parties involved: red for the Social Democrats, green for the Green Party, and yellow for the FDP.
- Mr. Sattelberger was part of the FDP team that discussed new ideas for innovation and research.
- Once the new government was formed, he was appointed as a special assistant to the Federal Minister of Education and Research.
- In this role, he focused on important topics such as diversity, new technologies, STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and making things more digital.
