Thomas Southwell, 2nd Baron Southwell (born January 7, 1698 – died November 19, 1766) was an important Irish nobleman and politician. He was also a member of the Privy Council of Ireland, a group of advisors to the King. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, a famous group for scientists. From 1717 to 1720, he was known as The Honourable Thomas Southwell.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Southwell was the oldest son of Thomas Southwell, 1st Baron Southwell. His mother was Lady Meliora Coningsby. Her father was Thomas Coningsby, 1st Earl Coningsby. Thomas had a younger brother named Henry. His uncles were William Southwell and Richard.

In 1743, Thomas Southwell became the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. This was a very important role in the freemason society. He held this position for one year.

Political Career

In 1717, Thomas Southwell became a member of the Irish House of Commons. He represented County Limerick. This was the same area his father had represented before him. He served in this role until 1720.

In 1720, he took over his father's title as Baron. In 1726, Southwell became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This council advised the King on important matters. In 1735, he joined the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists. He was also the Governor of County Limerick. He held this position until 1762, when he decided to step down.

His Family

In March 1719, Thomas Southwell married Mary Coke. She was the oldest daughter of Thomas Coke. They had three sons together. Thomas Southwell passed away at Craig's Court in Charing Cross. He was 68 years old. His oldest son, Thomas, took over his titles.

His younger brother, Edmund Southwell, was a close friend of the famous writer Samuel Johnson. Edmund was also the person who introduced the well-known Shakespearean expert Edmond Malone to Samuel Johnson.
