Dr. Sutton's Important Book
In 1813, Dr. Sutton published a very important book. It was called Tracts on Delirium Tremens, on Peritonitis, and on Some other Internal Inflammatory Affections, and on the Gout.
Understanding Delirium Tremens
The part of his book about delirium tremens was very detailed. It included 16 stories about patients he had treated. He carefully described their symptoms. He also explained how to tell this illness apart from other brain problems like mania.
Dr. Sutton shared an interesting case about a woman who didn't seem to drink much. But he found out she often drank large amounts of a medicine called Tincture of Lavender. This medicine had a lot of alcohol in it.
New Ways to Treat Illness
Dr. Sutton had new ideas for how to treat delirium tremens. At that time, doctors often used a method called bleeding to treat many illnesses. But Dr. Sutton usually did not use bleeding for this condition. Instead, he found that helping patients get a good, long sleep often made them feel much better when they woke up. He also suggested using a mild laxative if needed.
Later Life
Thomas Sutton passed away in Greenwich in 1835. He is remembered for his important work in understanding and treating delirium tremens.
