Thomas Swayne facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Swayne was a professional cricket player from the 1770s. He played for the Surrey team. We don't know exactly when he was born or when he died.

Most of Swayne's cricket career probably happened before 1772. That's when people started keeping detailed records of cricket matches. These records are called the statistical record.

Who Was Thomas Swayne?

Thomas Swayne was a skilled cricketer. He played during a time when not all matches were fully recorded. This means we only have some information about his games.

He played in three important matches between 1775 and 1778. These were called first-class cricket matches. Even though only a few games are recorded, people believe he played cricket for many years before that.

Life After Cricket

By 1773, Thomas Swayne became the owner of a pub called the White Hart. This pub was in a town called Chertsey. It was common for cricket players to become pub owners after they finished playing. It was a good way for them to continue working.

The White Hart pub was also connected to cricket. In 1773, an advertisement in the Public Advertiser newspaper mentioned it. It said that for an upcoming cricket match between Surrey and Hampshire, Thomas Swayne would provide good places to stay at the White Hart. He also helped build a special viewing area at the cricket ground, Laleham Burway.
