Thorlac Francis Samuel Turville-Petre (born January 6, 1944) is an English expert in language history. He is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Nottingham. This means he is a retired professor who still keeps his title. He used to be the head of the School of English there. His main area of study is Middle English literature, which includes old English writings from around the 1100s to the 1500s.

Thorlac Turville-Petre was born on January 6, 1944. His parents were Gabriel and Joan Turville-Petre. Both of his parents were important scholars. They studied Old Norse studies, which is about the ancient languages and history of Scandinavia, at the University of Oxford.

His Education and Career

Thorlac went to Magdalen College School, Oxford. He then studied at Jesus College, Oxford. There, he earned several degrees: a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), a Bachelor of Letters (B.Litt.), and a Master of Arts (M.A.).

In 1971, he started working at the University of Nottingham. He began as a lecturer, which is a type of university teacher. Later, he became a Professor of Medieval English Literature. For many years, he led the Medieval section of the School of English. From 1997 to 2001, he was the head of the entire School of English at the University of Nottingham.

His Research and Writings

Professor Turville-Petre taught about Middle English literature at the university. He has done important research on old texts. These include the Wollaton Manuscripts and Piers Plowman. These are significant pieces of historical literature.

He officially retired from the University of Nottingham on August 31, 2010. However, he has continued to teach there. He has written many award-winning academic papers and major books. He has also received large grants for his research. In 2010, a special book called Medieval Alliterative Poetry was published in his honor. This type of book, called a festschrift, celebrates a scholar's work. It was edited by John A. Burrow and Hoyt N. Duggan.
