You can find Thoroughfare on Virginia State Route 55. This road is also known as John Marshall Highway. It is about 1.5 miles west of Haymarket. The Norfolk Southern Railway tracks also cross the road here.

Thoroughfare has a special past. It was founded by former slaves. These were people who had been enslaved and gained their freedom. The community grew and did very well. This was especially true through the 1940s. It was a place where people built new lives.
