Meet the Mountains

The Three Brothers are a group of three distinct mountains. Each has its own name and height:

  • North Brother: This mountain is 476 metres (1,562 ft) tall. 31°38′31″S 152°48′07″E / 31.642°S 152.802°E / -31.642; 152.802

The South Brother mountain is in the Mid-Coast Council area. The Middle and North Brothers are located in the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area.

National Parks and Uses

Two of the mountains are special national parks. The North Brother is part of Dooragan National Park. The Middle Brother is part of Middle Brother National Park.

The top of Middle Brother mountain is also important for communication. It holds the main radio and television transmitters for the Mid North Coast region.

Why are they called Three Brothers?

There are two interesting stories about how these mountains got their name.

Aboriginal Dreamtime Story

The local Aboriginal people, the Birpai people, have a special dreamtime story. They tell of three brothers who were killed by a witch named Widjirriejuggi. The brothers were buried where the mountains now stand. The youngest brother was named Dooragan. This name is now used for one of the national parks.

Captain Cook's Naming

By chance, when Captain James Cook sailed past this area on May 12, 1770, he also named the mountains Three Brothers. He thought the mountains "bore some resemblance to each other." It's a fun coincidence because one of the ships Cook worked on earlier in his life was also named Three Brothers.
