Where Does the River Start?

The Three Mile River doesn't begin from just one spot. Instead, it forms when two smaller rivers, the Rumford River and the Wading River, join together. This meeting point is located in the town of Norton. Think of it like two streams combining to make a bigger one!

The River's Journey

From where it starts in Norton, the Three Mile River flows mostly towards the southeast. It travels for about 13.5 miles (which is about 21.7 kilometers). As it flows, it passes through a few different towns. These towns include Norton, Taunton, and Dighton. Finally, the Three Mile River joins a larger river called the Taunton River.

Protecting Our River

The Three Mile River and the land around it are very special. Because of this, on August 25, 2008, the area was given an important title: an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC). This special name was given by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).

What does being an ACEC mean? It means that the area is very important for nature and the environment. The ACEC title helps protect the river and its surroundings. It puts certain rules and limits on new buildings or other human activities. This helps make sure the river stays healthy and beautiful for everyone, including the plants and animals that live there.
