Thrybergh Country Park facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thrybergh Country Park is a special place in South Yorkshire. It has a big lake, called a reservoir, and a nature reserve. You can find it between the villages of Thrybergh and Hooton Roberts, near Rotherham. This park first opened its doors in 1983.

Park History

The large lake at Thrybergh was built a long time ago, between 1876 and 1880. Its main job was to provide clean drinking water for the people living in Doncaster.

In 1980, the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council took over the site. They decided to turn it into a nature reserve and a country park. It officially opened in 1983 for everyone to enjoy. In 2006, the park even won a special award called the Green Flag Award. This award celebrates the best green spaces in the country.

Wildlife and Nature

Thrybergh Country Park is a very important home for many animals and plants. It's a great place to see wildlife. More than 155 different kinds of birds have been seen here. You might also spot 20 types of mammals and 170 kinds of plants.

The park is a key stop for birds when they are migrating. This happens in spring and autumn. In winter, lots of ducks, geese, and swans come to stay. There are two special places called bird hides where you can watch the birds without disturbing them.

The whole country park is about 60 acres big. The reservoir itself covers 35 acres. There are also over 2 miles of paths that go all the way around the lake. These paths are flat, so they are good for buggies and wheelchairs.

Fun Things to Do

Thrybergh Country Park is easy to get to by car from the A630 Doncaster Road. There's also a bus stop right outside the main entrance. Inside the park, you'll find a car park where you can pay to park your car.

Near the car park, there's a nice café where you can get food and drinks. It has outdoor seating too. You can also find an ice cream shop and clean toilets, including ones for people with disabilities. You can even buy bird seed to feed the ducks! If you need help getting around, you can rent Mobility scooters.

Park rangers are always on site to help visitors. If you like fishing, you can go fly fishing here from March to October. Fishermen can use special float tubes or even book rowing boats 24 hours in advance. However, rangers can stop boats from going out if the weather is bad.

There is also a campsite within the park. It has space for 24 caravans. Kids will love the children's play area too! Remember, swimming is not allowed in the lake for safety reasons.
