Tiago Santos's Club Journey
Playing for Estoril
Tiago Santos spent most of his younger years learning football at the Sporting CP academy. He also played for other youth teams like Oeiras and Sacavenense. In 2021, he joined the Under-23 team of Estoril. By July 2022, he was ready to join Estoril's main team for the 2022–23 season.
Santos played his first professional game on August 19, 2022. It was a Primeira Liga match against Rio Ave, which ended in a 2–2 draw. He even helped set up the first goal of the game. In April 2023, he was named the Young Player of the Month in the Primeira Liga. During the 2022–23 season, Santos made 30 appearances in the league and helped his team score 5 goals.
In the summer of 2023, another big Portuguese club, Benfica, wanted to sign Santos. Estoril even agreed to sell him for about €5 million. However, his old club, Sporting CP, had a special rule in his contract. This rule said that if Santos was sold to a rival team like Benfica or Porto, Sporting CP would be owed €20 million. Because of this special rule, the transfer to Benfica did not happen.
Moving to Lille
On July 5, 2023, Tiago Santos signed a five-year contract with Ligue 1 club Lille in France. Lille paid €6.5 million to bring him to their team.
He played his first game for Lille on August 11, starting in a 1–1 draw against Nice. This was the first match of the 2023–24 Ligue 1 season. Just thirteen days later, Santos played his first game in a European competition. He started in a 2–1 home win against HNK Rijeka in the UEFA Europa Conference League. On November 26, 2023, Santos scored his first professional goal. It was a powerful shot from outside the penalty box in a 2–0 win against Olympique Lyonnais.
Playing for Portugal
Tiago Santos was born in Portugal, and his father is from Angola. He made his first international appearance for the Portugal U21s on September 8, 2023. He started in a 3–0 win against Andorra in a qualifying match for the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
In September 2024, he was called up to play for the senior Portugal national team for the first time. This was for the Nations League games against Croatia and Scotland.
