Tianhe-I facts for kids
Tianhe-I is a super powerful computer built in China. It started working on October 29, 2009. Think of it like one of the fastest computers in the world! It used to be the second fastest, taking over from another supercomputer called Jaguar.
What is Tianhe-I?
Tianhe-I has a huge amount of memory, about 98,304 gigabytes! It can do amazing calculations very, very fast. We measure this speed in something called FLOPS, and Tianhe-I can reach 2.507 petaflops at its fastest. That's a lot of calculations per second! It uses a special computer program called Linux to run everything.
What Does Tianhe-I Do?
This supercomputer is used for important jobs. For example, scientists use it to help find new sources of energy. It also helps engineers by running simulations. This means it can create virtual tests of things like aircraft to see how they would work in real life, all without building a physical model first.
Its Big Upgrade
When Tianhe-I was first built, it had 5,010 main processing units (CPUs) and 2,560 graphics processing units (GPUs). Back then, it was the fifth-fastest supercomputer. But it got a big upgrade! After the upgrade, it now has 14,336 CPUs and 7,168 GPUs. This huge increase in power made it the fastest supercomputer in the world for a while!
