Piranesi-3011
Roman funeral inscriptions reproduced by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, from the family grave of the Plautia gens in Tivoli (Italy). Inscription CIL XIV, 3608 = AE 1956, 208 refers to Tiberius Plautius Silvanus Aelianus and his deeds.

Tiberius Plautius Silvanus Aelianus was an important leader in the Roman world. He belonged to a noble Roman family, known as patricians. He held the high position of consul twice, first in 45 AD and again in 74 AD.

He was the adopted nephew of Plautia Urgulanilla. She was the first wife of the Roman emperor Claudius. We know that Aelianus, as a pontifex (a type of priest), led a special prayer. This happened when the first stone of the new Capitol building was laid in 70 AD. Some old writings call him "Plautius Aelianus." But a special inscription tells us his full name was Tiberius Plautius Silvanus Aelianus. It also shows he held many important military jobs.

Serving the Empire

Tiberius Plautius Silvanus Aelianus had a long and successful career. He served different emperors and helped manage large parts of the Roman Empire.

Leader in Moesia

Under Emperor Nero, Aelianus was the legate (governor) of Moesia. This was a Roman province located near the Danube River. He governed Moesia from 61 AD to 66 AD. During his time there, he used strong military tactics to control the region. He also sent large amounts of wheat from Moesia to Rome. This helped feed the Roman people, especially after the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD. The fire had caused problems with food supplies in the city.

Moving to Hispania

Later, Aelianus was sent to Hispania (modern-day Spain). At that time, Hispania did not have a provincial governor. His experience made him a good choice for this role.

Urban Prefect of Rome

In 69 AD, Emperor Vespasian wanted Aelianus to become the Urban prefect of Rome. This was a very important job, like being the mayor and police chief of the city. Vespasian wanted him to replace his brother, Sabinus, who had been killed.

Aelianus was called back to Rome. Vespasian suggested that Aelianus should receive a triumph. A triumph was a huge parade and celebration for a military commander. It honored his great service in Moesia. This was a way for Vespasian to show that Nero had not properly honored Aelianus. The Roman Senate agreed and voted for Aelianus to have his triumph.

Settling New People

Around 60 AD, Aelianus did something very significant. He helped more than 100,000 people from across the Danube River move into Moesia. These people, called "Transdanubians," came with their families and leaders. Aelianus helped settle them in the Roman province. They then paid tribute (taxes) to Rome. This was a way to bring new people into the empire and expand its influence.
