Tights facts for kids
Tights are a type of clothing that fits tightly on your legs and body, usually from your waist down to your feet. In some places, like America, they are also called pantyhose. People often wear tights for dancing or to keep their legs warm. Long ago, tights were made from stretchy silk. Today, many tights are made from a stretchy material called spandex.
The History of Tights
Tights were first invented in 1598. A man named William Lee, who was a reverend, created a special machine. This machine could knit silk together very quickly. This invention was a big step in making knitted clothing like tights.
Different Kinds of Tights
Tights come in many different styles, from very thin to quite thick.
- Sheer tights are thin and you can see through them a little.
- Opaque tights are thicker and you cannot see through them.
People measure how thick tights are using something called "denier." The higher the denier number, the thicker the tights are. There are five main groups that show how thick tights can be:
- Ultra sheer: Very thin, almost like a second skin.
- Sheer: Thin, but a bit more coverage than ultra sheer.
- Semi-opaque: Medium thickness, offering some coverage.
- Opaque: Thick, you cannot see through them.
- Thick-opaque: Very thick, providing a lot of warmth and coverage.

Why People Wear Tights
People wear tights for many reasons. One main reason is to keep their legs warm. Tights also come in a huge variety of colors and patterns, so they can be a fun part of an outfit. You can find them in different lengths and made from various materials.
Some tights, like shiny metallic ones, might not stretch as much as others. Basic nylon tights are usually very stretchy and easy to fit because they can stretch a lot.
