History of the Distillery
How It Started
The people who owned Timboon Fine Ice Cream decided to open this distillery. They wanted to make products that people would enjoy all year. Ice cream is mostly popular in the summer, so they looked for something new.
Making Whisky
Making whisky is a cool process. First, they use a grain called malted barley. This barley is brewed into a liquid at another place nearby. Then, this liquid comes to the Railway Shed. Here, it goes into a big, special copper pot called a still. This still holds 600 litres and was custom made near Hobart. After distilling, the liquid becomes whisky. It then rests and gets its flavour in small wooden barrels called port casks.
Local History of Distilling
The town of Timboon has a bit of a secret history with making drinks. Long ago, in the 1890s, a person named Tom Delaney was known for making a lot of "Mountain Dew" whisky. People say he made about 100 gallons every week!
Products They Make
The main product from the Timboon Railway Shed Distillery is their Timboon Single Malt whisky. But they also make other special drinks that change with the seasons. These include creamy Irish cream, nutty nocino, clear vodka, zesty limoncello, and sweet apple liqueur.
Awards and Recognition
The Timboon Single Malt whisky has won awards. In 2011, it received a bronze medal. This award was given at the Australian Malt Whisky Awards.
