Building History
The Times Building has an interesting past. It was originally planned to have only eleven floors. But during construction, something changed!
Adding an Extra Floor
The builders of the Russel Erskine Hotel announced their hotel would have twelve floors. So, the Times Building decided to add a twelfth floor too! This happened while the building was still being built. Because of this last-minute change, the elevators don't go all the way to the very top floor.
Early Occupants
The Huntsville Times newspaper was the first main tenant. They used the building from when it opened in 1928 until 1956. Then, they moved to a new place on Memorial Parkway.
Later, in the 1970s and 1980s, the building was home to two radio stations. WLRH, a public radio station, was in the basement. The commercial radio station WAHR broadcasted from "The Top of the Times." They had to move out in the late 1980s.
Who Uses the Building Now?
Today, the Times Building is still a busy place.
J.F. Drake State College
Since January 2010, J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College has used the basement level. They have seven classrooms there, including two large computer labs. This space covers about 10,000 square feet (929 square meters).
