Timothy Carlton was born in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. His mother was Pauline Ellen Laing. His father, Henry Carlton Cumberbatch, was a respected naval officer. Henry served bravely in both World War I and World War II. He was also a well-known person in London society.
Timothy's grandfather, Henry Arnold Cumberbatch, was also a very important figure. He served as the Consul General for Queen Victoria in Turkey. This means he was a top diplomat representing the Queen in that country.
